Community and Connection
The connections I've made with other sober women online have been so meaningful and essential to the growth I've experienced thus far.
Joining online support groups has allowed the essential key of community to come in and help shape my journey of sobriety. I am so thankful for this community because they "get it."
Sometimes the journey of living a life without alcohol can feel lonely, but it doesn't have to be. There are so many others out there who are eager to connect and support in genuine and authentic ways.
I hop on a call once or twice a week with other women who are in various stages of their journey and it's been so helpful to speak to others who are further along than me and also encourage others who aren't quite as far as I am. It's also been inspiring to hear about others' journeys and realize that on the surface, our circumstances might be different, but the underlying feelings are all very much the same. Having conversations about our feelings surrounding our choices is something only other sober people can fully understand and why it's so important to connect with others and lean into a like-minded community.
I always get so nervous to share on the Zoom calls but after I do, I feel so seen, valued, and more deeply connected to women who want nothing more than to offer their support and encourage me to keep going. And hearing the stories of others always leaves me in awe of their strength and leaves me feeling inspired and motivated.
If you've been sober-curious or stuck in a cycle of drinking that no longer is serving you but you can't quite seem to kick the habit I am willing to bet that joining a like-minded community is the missing piece to taking it further.
Community not only inspires us in various ways, but it helps to keep us accountable. It also offers a sense of validation when the journey gets rough and it seems no one gets how hard it is. The community also reminds you that this journey gets easier with every day passing and the days add up little by little.
As I'm writing this I am currently 290 days alcohol-free. That's 290 days that I made a choice that wasn't always easy to make. This lifestyle is a choice that goes against a world centered around alcohol and that's incredibly brave. But I like to remind myself that if it were easy everyone would do it.
If you're not quite ready to join a group just yet, I get it. It can be really scary at first. Might you try following the sober community on Instagram instead? Signing up for weekly emails from sober influencers that hit your inbox once or twice a week. These are tangible steps you can take that will bring you closer to the connection and community that is awaiting your presence.
